    Normandy, Net-Zero and Springwatch

Let me connect the dots on that one for you.
blog 86 syntech biofuel Normandy Net-Zero and Springwatch blog poppy with pollution in distance

    Happy Friday Friends.

This week threw us two absolute belters of commemorations. Completely different beasts, but both singing the same tune, people power when it really counts.

Thursday hit us with World Environment Day. Friday? D-Day’s anniversary. Now before you think I’ve lost the plot comparing tree-hugging to beach-storming, hear me out. Both stories are about ordinary people doing extraordinary things when the chips are down.

The environment’s been getting hammered with unforced errors for decades. We’re definitely in the long game now. But here’s the kicker: this isn’t a solo sport. Just like those Allied forces back in ’44, or watching a perfect doubles rally at Wimbledon which just due to start, success comes from coordination, timing, and everyone pulling in the same direction.

At Syntech Biofuel, fresh starts are our bread and butter. We witness them daily in the most unlikely places. Take used cooking oil. “From chip shop to combustion engine” was thrown out by our CEO in a creative meeting this week and will no doubt become one of my favourite phrases when I’m out and about pontificating from my sustainability pulpit. Think about it: your Friday night fish and chips creates something that powers JCB diggers, slashes carbon emissions, and kicks our fossil fuel habit.

Small change? Maybe. Scale it up? Revolutionary.

BBC’s Springwatch made its glorious return this week too. I know, I know, not everyone’s cup of tea. But watching those Blue Tits fledge, badgers doing their patient thing, and swallows going absolutely mental with activity reminds you that nature, given half a chance, bounces back beautifully.

This is where my optimism kicks into overdrive. Environmental doom-mongering? Not for me, thanks. We know the science inside out. We know the challenges are massive. But we also know that when people roll their sleeves up and get stuck in together, magic happens. As I mentioned last week, just ask our site bees who’ve spontaneously doubled their hive count. Fresh starts popping up everywhere.

Progress usually arrives quietly. No fanfare, no trumpets. Just persistence. Whether it’s nature reclaiming wasteland or our engineers fine-tuning our refinery on new kit testing this week to squeeze every drop of efficiency, change happens through determination, not declarations or well-meaning platitudes.

The conversations we’re having about biofuels are absolutely electric (soz, pun absolutely intended) right now. Especially the ones with rock-solid feedstock stories sitting pretty at the top of the carbon reduction league.

Not all fuels are created equal, and frankly, not all ‘green’ claims hold water. But waste-based fuels from traceable sources? Cooking oil? Now we’re talking serious impact territory. These aren’t marginal gains, these are the heavyweight champions of decarbonisation.

On a week celebrating both those who sacrificed everything for freedom and those fighting for our planet’s future, it’s worth stopping for a moment. Not to congratulate ourselves, but to recommit. Because whether we’re talking Normandy or Net Zero, success demands courage, clarity, and cooperation.

We’re incredibly fortunate at Syntech. We get front-row seats to change. We’re part of the solution. We’re writing a completely new story about fuel that starts in a fryer and ends in forward momentum and the construction of river crossings, reducing their carbon emissions by 70%( Go LTC!!).

And we’re doing it with a team that genuinely cares across operations, sustainability, innovation, and community outreach.

This isn’t just about technology. It’s about mindset. It’s about asking what else is possible. What else deserves a second chance. What else could transform from waste to wonder.

This World Environment Day, I’m thinking big picture. Past and future colliding. Springwatch swallows and clean-fuel construction plant. Used Chip Oil finding its true calling. And the people making it all happen.

Because sometimes, the most powerful revolutions start with the simplest question….. what if we tried something different?

Until next time, thanks for reading, have a beautiful weekend.

    Mike.
